MIZU means water in Japanese, and it was the theme for Pernille Snedker research trip to Japan.
Inspired by this journey and water, Pernille Snedker has created a new pattern on wood called SUMI. The pattern mirrors ripples movements on a water surface and is made with a japanese marbling technique called Suminagashi.
In the exhibition space is a big mirror reflect- ing the large patterned floor and creating
an optical illution of an pathway through the space.
Central in the exhibition is a long bath of water. Each day of the exhibition, Pernille Snedker marbled with a traditional Japanese technique, Suminagashi, and made prints with her exhibited

In this mono print the colors are created by nature itself, without the conscious influence of man.

Pernille Snedker Hansen mearly became the attentive observer who captured the moving colored
algae on the water surface, that specific day in Fredericia.

In her daily life at the studio the marbling bath is a mini laboratory, a concentrated small world where natural phenomena plays out, and are captured in frozen moments on mono prints.

In the In-Situ FA series, the materials and marbling process were placed outside in a burnt down ground after a catastrophic fire at Fredericia Industry Harbour in 2016. In the aftermath only a wasteland of giant polluted puddles remained. In these puddles several marbling sessions were preformed. Wind, rain, temperature, pollution
and time became co-creators and are reflected in the mono-prints that were created onsite.

One special print in this series revealed a beautiful variation of subtle colored algae on the water surface of the dirty waterpuddle. The algaes became the pigments on the paper and resembles a
landscape that unfolds in its horizon.

Two steam-bent, slightly curved sides with a slit that merged into each other form a seat.

Inspired by the Japanese marbling technique Suminagashi, colors are dripped into a watersurface, forming rings in the
water. Gently pushed by a breath of air, the floating pattern imitates ripples on water.

Carefully the steam-bent wood surface is flipped onto the pattern on the water surface and transferring the pattern onto the stool.

A tambour cabinet, where the immediate joy of opening and closing the sliding front is put into focus.

The tambour roller surface has been applied with a hand-marbled with pattern going from light to dark earth and pink tones.

The tambour surface does not hide within furniture when opening. Instead it slides to the backside, emphasizing and revealing the sliding movement and
pattern in motion.

In this series, the constant movement of the colors is depicted
as they float on the water surface.

All 3 works are made in the same way; the same colors, the same procedure
of colored drops, a drop falls in the middle of the previous drop and create
rings.

But the length of time is different. Number 1 has been given the
less time and number 3 has been given the most time. The result of the motif is
therefor different each time on each monoprints.

'Hypernature' is a folding screen inspired by the
picturesque landscapes of traditional Japanese folding screens. The screen's motif is a stylized landscape where 2 colors meet in motion on the surface.

The decoration is made with a marbling technique in
which colors float on water and the motif thereof becomes a frozen moment.

By translating Japanese craft traditions such as
folding screens, Suminagashi ink technique and origami, Else-Rikke Bruun & Pernille Snedker have developed a flexible pleated folding screen in birch veneer glued onto canvas.

A screen that both protects and shields, and on the

opposite side exposes and creates a scene.

is inspired by a parquet floor product from 1800-century, where a thin flexible
parquet floor was produced as an alternative to expensive parquet flooring for the home.

The marbling pattern and shape of the Carpet is inspired by a river that runs
through a landscape and is shaped by obstacles on it’s way.
